Colonel James A. Coale
Dr. Coale has been teaching and coaching at the Virginia Military Institute since 1979. He is currently the Professor and Head, of the Department of Physical Education. As the Head of the Department of Physical Education, he is also responsible for the Rat Challenge Program, Fitness Testing for the Corps of Cadets, and the Health/Wellness program for faculty and staff. Additionally, he serves as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Athletics.
His teaching responsibilities have included: Boxing, Wresting, Weight Training, Principles of Conditioning, Drug and Alcohol, Racquetball and CPR.
Dr. Coale’s area of focus centers on the benefits derived from Resistance Training – from both the performance perspective, and the health/wellness perspective. From the performance aspect, his focus is on the younger athlete. With regard to the health/wellness aspect, his focus is on older populations - relative to quality-of-life issues.
He received his bachelor’s degree from Springfield College in 1979. He received his master’s degree from James Madison University in 1982, and his doctorate degree in 1987 from the University of Maryland. He lives in Lexington, Virginia with his wife Kathy and they have three sons – Kevin, Danny and Ryan.
