Financial Aid Process

In order to apply for financial aid for 2013-2014 a cadet (or a prospective cadet) needs to complete and to submit the VMI Financial Aid Application and the 2013-2014 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Best place to start is the VMI Financial Aid home page.  The awarding process for prospective cadets begins March 1st and for returning cadets April 1st.  Both prospective cadets and returning cadets will be notified through their VMI email account when financial aid has been awarded.  Award letters may be viewed only through Post View

Prospective cadets and returning cadets selected for “verification” will be notified and must provide the following in order to complete the financial aid application process:

  • Completed 2013-14 Verification Worksheet located under Forms on the Financial Aid homepage (after January 1, 2013); AND
  • Signed copy of the cadet’s and parents’ 2012 Federal tax return (dependent cadets) or signed copy of cadet’s 2012 Federal tax return only (independent cadets).

Subsidized and unsubsidized federal direct loans only are accepted or rejected through Post View.  If you accept your loans and are a first-time borrower (Direct or PLUS Loan) you must complete/submit an electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN) at https://www.studentloans.gov.  In addition, new first-time borrowers (Direct Loan) are also required to complete entrance counseling at https://www.studentloans.gov.
