Class of 2013 Presents Record-Setting Graduation Gift

At the traditional Graduation Parade on May 14, the Class of 2013 presented the proceeds of its Graduation Campaign to General Peay: $33,920.13. This gift was provided by 115 cadets or 34% of the Class. In terms of money raised and class participation, the Class of 2013’s effort set new records.
Presenting the gift on behalf of the Class of 2013 were (l to r) Justin Klein, Class Historian; Woody Skudin, Class Vice President; John Dommert, Class President; and Charlie Jones, Class Agent. General Peay accepted the gift on behalf of the Institute and Brian Scott Crockett, the VMI Foundation’s CEO (far left), accepted it on behalf of the VMI Alumni Agencies.
As with past Graduation Gifts give since 2006, the gift represents the results of a fundraising campaign run by the class. The effort, known as the Graduation Campaign, is the culmination of the Barracks Program, a four-year series of events that explain the enduring importance of alumni who “give back” to VMI.
The Barracks Program engages cadets throughout their time in Barracks and educates them about the importance of private money to VMI and to their education as well as how, because of it, many cadets get opportunity to attend VMI. It also stresses that, upon graduation, they will be expected to take their places in the ranks of alumni donors.
“The Brother Rats of Class of 2013 deserve the VMI Family’s thanks for mounting such a strong effort on behalf of the Institute,” said Crockett. “The leadership of many members of the Class and the generosity of the Brother Rats served to ensure a record-setting success.”
