Mr. Charles W. Mathers, VMI Class of 1962
Charles Mathers died in his office on the 99th floor of Tower One of the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001. Attending VMI for one year, Mathers enlisted in the U.S. Marines before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1966.
In 1969 he began a career with Johnson & Higgins, where he started their nuclear power division. At the time of his death he was managing director of Marsh Power Group. Mathers served his community of Sea Girt, N.J., as a volunteer firefighter for nearly 20 years. He retired as president of the Sea Girt Volunteer Fire Company in the mid-1990s.
Charles Mathers is survived by his wife, Margaret, two daughters, Elizabeth Mathers and Marjorie Kane, one son, Charles Hood, and four grandchildren.
